What to expect from refurbished technology

Product-specific information always takes priority. These notes explain common differences between refurbished, open-box and brand-new products.

Testing and preparation

Testing may include visual inspection, hardware and functionality checks, cleaning and sanitisation, data erasure, operating-system reset, battery and charging checks, and final quality control. Testing may not reproduce every operating environment or intermittent issue.

Batteries

Batteries are consumable components. Unless a listing states a specific battery-health percentage, runtime is not guaranteed to match a new device.

Accessories and chargers

Essential accessories stated in the listing will be supplied. Original or compatible replacement accessories may be used as stated.

Packaging and product images

Products may arrive in original, replacement, distributor, plain protective or Refurbly-branded packaging. Images may be representative and may not show every cosmetic mark.

Component variations

Compatible component brands or revisions may vary between otherwise similar units, while the product will meet the core specifications stated in the listing.

Compatibility and water resistance

Customers should confirm software, network, port and accessory compatibility before purchase. Original water-resistance ratings are not guaranteed for refurbished or repaired products unless expressly confirmed.

Detailed product guide

The detailed information below applies alongside the condition, specifications, images and inclusions shown on each product listing.

Additional product considerations

The detailed information below applies alongside the condition, specifications, images and inclusions shown on each product listing.

1. Brand-New Products

A product described as Brand New has not previously been used by a consumer and is expected to be supplied in new condition.

Depending on the product and its source, a brand-new product may:

  • Be factory sealed in original retail packaging
  • Be supplied in manufacturer or distributor packaging
  • Have packaging that shows minor storage, handling or transit wear
  • Be opened for identification, inspection, serial-number recording or quality control
  • Include original manufacturer accessories unless otherwise stated

Minor wear to external packaging does not ordinarily affect the condition of the product inside and is not considered a product defect.

2. New or Unused – Open Box

A product described as New – Open Box, Unused – Open Box or similar is an unused or substantially unused product whose original packaging has been opened, damaged, replaced or removed.

Open-box products may include:

  • Customer returns that show no meaningful signs of use
  • Cancelled orders
  • Ex-display products with no significant use
  • Products opened for inspection, testing or photography
  • Products supplied without original retail packaging
  • Products with damaged or incomplete packaging

Open-box products may be supplied in original, replacement or plain packaging. Accessories may be original or compatible replacements, as stated in the listing.

3. Refurbished Products

A product described as Refurbished is a pre-owned, returned, ex-lease, ex-corporate, ex-display or otherwise previously handled product that has been assessed and prepared for resale.

Refurbishment may include:

  • Visual inspection
  • Hardware and functionality testing
  • Cleaning and sanitisation
  • Data erasure where applicable
  • Operating-system installation or reset
  • Repair or replacement of defective components
  • Battery and charging checks
  • Final quality-control inspection

Refurbished does not mean that every component has been replaced or that the product will appear identical to a newly manufactured product.

Refurbished products may show signs of previous use consistent with the advertised cosmetic grade.

4. Refurbished – Excellent Condition

A product graded Excellent is fully functional and is expected to have only minimal signs of previous use.

It may have:

  • Very light surface marks
  • Minor handling marks visible under close inspection
  • Light wear around ports, edges or contact areas
  • Minor packaging or accessory variations

The screen or primary display area should generally be free from significant visible scratches when viewed during normal use.

5. Refurbished – Very Good Condition

A product graded Very Good is fully functional and may show moderate cosmetic signs of previous use.

It may have:

  • Visible scratches or surface marks
  • Small scuffs or minor dents
  • Wear around edges, ports, keyboards or palm-rest areas
  • Light marks on the screen that do not materially affect ordinary use
  • Normal wear consistent with a professionally used device

Cosmetic wear does not affect the product’s normal operation.

6. Refurbished – Good Condition

A product graded Good is fully functional but may show noticeable cosmetic wear resulting from previous use.

It may have:

  • Noticeable scratches, marks or scuffs
  • Small dents, chips or casing wear
  • Worn keys, buttons or external surfaces
  • Screen marks that remain visible when the display is off
  • Labels, asset marks or signs of previous commercial use
  • Discolouration or wear that does not affect functionality

Good-condition products are suitable for customers who prioritise functionality and value over cosmetic appearance.

7. Fair Condition or Value Grade

A product described as Fair, Value Grade, Grade C or similar remains functional but may have substantial cosmetic wear.

It may have:

  • Heavy scratches or scuffing
  • Multiple dents, chips or casing marks
  • Noticeable screen blemishes
  • Significant keyboard, housing or surface wear
  • Missing decorative trims or non-essential cosmetic parts
  • Permanent asset markings or removed asset labels

Any known issue affecting normal operation will be disclosed in the product description.

8. Pre-Owned or Used Products

A product described as Pre-Owned or Used has previously been owned or operated and may not have undergone the same refurbishment process as a product specifically described as refurbished.

The condition, testing completed, accessories and known defects will be stated in the relevant product listing where applicable.

9. Ex-Lease and Ex-Corporate Products

Ex-lease and ex-corporate products were previously used by businesses, government organisations, educational institutions or other commercial users.

These products may have:

  • Asset labels or evidence of label removal
  • Security markings or engraving
  • Wear caused by docking stations or commercial installations
  • Variations in components between otherwise similar units
  • Commercial BIOS or management settings that have been reset where possible

Ex-lease and ex-corporate products are tested for normal functionality before sale unless expressly listed as untested, faulty or for parts.

10. Ex-Display Products

Ex-display products may have been displayed in a retail, showroom, exhibition or demonstration environment.

They may show:

  • Handling marks
  • Light cosmetic wear
  • Minor marks from stands, mounts or security devices
  • Opened or replacement packaging
  • Missing non-essential promotional materials

Any significant functional or cosmetic issue known to Refurbly will be disclosed in the product listing.

11. Products Sold for Parts, Repair or As-Is

Products clearly described as For Parts, For Repair, Faulty, Untested or As-Is may not be fully functional.

These products are intended for technicians, repairers, recyclers or customers who understand that repair may be required.

The product may have additional faults that were not identified during the initial assessment. Customers should rely only on the condition and testing information expressly stated in the listing.

Descriptions such as “for parts” or “as-is” do not exclude any rights that cannot lawfully be excluded under Australian law.

12. Cosmetic Condition

Cosmetic grading is an assessment of general external appearance and does not guarantee that every individual mark will be described or photographed.

Cosmetic signs of previous use may include:

  • Scratches
  • Scuffs
  • Small dents
  • Paint wear
  • Discolouration
  • Keyboard or button wear
  • Marks around ports and charging points
  • Rubber-foot or base wear
  • Asset labels or evidence of label removal

Cosmetic wear that is consistent with the product’s disclosed condition grade and does not affect functionality is not ordinarily considered a fault.

13. Product Images

Product images may be manufacturer images, representative stock images or photographs of an actual unit.

Where representative images are used, the product supplied may have minor cosmetic, packaging, label, revision or accessory differences.

Images of refurbished and pre-owned products may not show every cosmetic mark on the individual unit supplied.

Product specifications and the written product description take priority where an image is illustrative only.

14. Screens and Displays

Refurbished and pre-owned displays may show minor signs of previous use, including:

  • Light surface scratches
  • Small pressure marks
  • Minor brightness variation
  • Very small pixel imperfections within normal grading tolerances
  • Minor keyboard impressions on laptop displays

Any significant display defect known to us that materially affects ordinary use will be disclosed in the listing.

15. Batteries

Batteries are consumable components and naturally lose capacity through age, charge cycles, storage and previous use.

Unless a product listing expressly states a specific battery-health percentage, battery runtime is not guaranteed to match the performance of a newly manufactured product.

Refurbished devices are assessed to confirm that the battery powers or charges the device to an acceptable operational level at the time of testing.

Actual battery runtime will depend on factors including:

  • Screen brightness
  • Applications and background processes
  • Network usage
  • Power-management settings
  • Battery age and previous charge cycles
  • Device configuration and operating environment

Where a battery is described as degraded, service recommended, faulty or requiring replacement, this will form part of the disclosed product condition.

16. Accessories and Chargers

Unless otherwise stated, refurbished or open-box products may be supplied with original manufacturer accessories or compatible replacement accessories.

Compatible accessories may include:

  • Chargers
  • Power cables
  • USB cables
  • Adapters
  • Keyboard and mouse sets
  • Other essential operating accessories

Non-essential accessories, printed manuals, promotional material, recovery media, original boxes and decorative packaging are not included unless specifically stated.

17. Packaging

Refurbished, open-box and pre-owned products may be supplied in:

  • Original retail packaging
  • Original packaging with wear or damage
  • Manufacturer replacement packaging
  • Distributor packaging
  • Plain protective packaging
  • Refurbly-branded packaging

Packaging may be selected based on product protection and shipping requirements rather than retail presentation.

18. Product Specifications and Component Variations

Products with the same model number may contain different compatible component brands, revisions or configurations.

Component variations may include:

  • Memory manufacturer
  • Storage-drive manufacturer
  • Display-panel manufacturer
  • Battery manufacturer
  • Wireless card
  • Keyboard layout or component revision
  • Power supply or adapter model

The product supplied will meet the core specifications stated in the listing unless a variation is disclosed before dispatch.

19. Storage Capacity

Advertised storage capacity is based on the manufacturer’s nominal capacity. The usable capacity displayed by the operating system will ordinarily be lower due to formatting, system files, recovery partitions and differences in how storage capacity is calculated.

20. Operating Systems and Software

Where an operating system is included, the product may be supplied with:

  • A clean operating-system installation
  • A factory reset
  • A digitally activated licence
  • A manufacturer recovery installation
  • Necessary drivers and standard system updates

Software availability, compatibility and future updates are controlled by the relevant software provider.

Third-party applications, subscriptions and licences are not included unless expressly stated in the product listing.

21. Device Compatibility

Customers are responsible for confirming that a product is compatible with their intended network, software, accessories, workplace systems or other equipment before purchase.

Product compatibility may depend on operating-system versions, service-provider support, regional specifications, network frequencies, ports, drivers and third-party software.

Please contact Refurbly before purchase where compatibility is essential to your intended use.

22. Mobile Phones, Tablets and Cellular Devices

Unless otherwise stated, cellular devices are expected to be unlocked or compatible with the networks identified in the product listing.

Customers should confirm network, SIM, eSIM, frequency and carrier compatibility before purchasing.

Refurbly is not responsible for a carrier’s decision to discontinue network support, restrict activation or change compatibility requirements after purchase.

23. Water Resistance

Any original manufacturer water-resistance rating may reduce over time through normal use, repairs, refurbishment, seal deterioration or previous handling.

Refurbly does not guarantee the ongoing water resistance of refurbished, pre-owned or repaired products unless expressly confirmed in writing.

Customers should not intentionally expose refurbished electronics to water or other liquids.

24. Testing Limitations

Refurbly performs reasonable functional testing appropriate to the product type. Testing may not reproduce every possible operating environment or detect an intermittent issue that does not occur during assessment.

Where an issue develops after purchase, customers should contact Refurbly under the applicable Refund Policy or warranty process.

25. Warranty

The applicable warranty period, where offered, will be displayed on the product page, order confirmation or accompanying documentation.

Manufacturer, distributor or Refurbly warranty coverage operates in addition to any rights and remedies available under applicable Australian consumer law.

Warranty coverage does not ordinarily apply to accidental damage, liquid damage, misuse, unauthorised repair or normal consumable wear, subject to rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

26. Differences Between Units

Where multiple refurbished or pre-owned units are sold under the same listing, individual units may differ slightly in:

  • Cosmetic marks
  • Packaging
  • Accessory brand
  • Component manufacturer
  • Serial number
  • Manufacturing date
  • Minor hardware revision

Each unit will meet the advertised model, core specifications and condition grade unless otherwise agreed.

27. Reporting a Condition Concern

If the product received does not reasonably match the advertised condition, please contact Refurbly promptly and provide:

  • Your order number
  • The product name and model
  • The serial number where applicable
  • A description of the concern
  • Clear photographs or video showing the issue
  • Photographs of the packaging where relevant

We will review the product listing, advertised grade and evidence provided before arranging an appropriate resolution.
